THE UCO CENTER FOR HISTORICAL PERFORMANCE PRESENTS GUEST ARTIST EMILY DAVIDSON IN CONCERT

The University of Central Oklahoma Center for Historical Performance will host guest artist Baroque cellist Emily Davidson for a series of concerts and a masters class Sept. 15-17.

“Emily is one of the leading baroque cellists of the new generation,” said Tess Remy-Schumacher, general coordinator for the Center for Historical Performance.

“Her playing combines technical excellence with a sophisticated taste for style and interpretation.  Her commitment to pedagogy and outreach is compelling.”

Davidson received her master’s degree from The Longy School of Music of Bard College and currently teaches in the Boston area.  She has performed with the Harvard Baroque Chamber Orchestra and the Boston Camerata, among others.

Davidson’s first UCO performance will be a solo concert at 4 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Good Shepard Anglican Church, 1000 N. Broadway, Edmond.

Admission is free and open to the public.

Davidson will perform works from her debut solo CD “Bass Sounds: Music for Unaccompanied Cello from the Early Baroque.”

Davidson’s performance will explore lesser-known unaccompanied cello repertoire from Gianbattista Degli Antonii and Domenico Gabrielli, the predecessors of J.S. Bach, as well as music from Bach.

“I’m attracted to Gabrielli and Antonii compositions because to me they epitomize the baroque cello,” explained Davidson.

“They use the cello as a true bass line voice, producing music that is dark, mysterious and peculiar at times, but never fails to convey a time period of rich musical expression.”

Davidson will give a free and open-to-the-public master class from 4-6 p.m. Sept. 16 at the Radke Fine Arts Theatre in the UCO Center for Transformative Learning.

Davidson’s finale event will include her joining faculty members of the UCO Center for Historical Performance for “Musik am Hofe Friedrich de Grossen,” a concert dedicated to composers from the Frederick the Great era at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 17 at the UCO Jazz Lab, 100 E. Fifth Street, Edmond.

This concert is a part of the Faculty Artist Concert Series, a yearlong series that showcase the talents of Central music faculty while also using proceeds to support scholarships and the School of Music.

Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling the School of Music at 405-974-5004.  Admission is free for Central students, faculty and staff with a Central I.D.

Davidson’s visit is a part of the outreach efforts of the UCO Center for Historical Performance, a new initiative from Central’s School of Music.  The Center dedicates its attention to both the preservation and interpretation of historical music written for historical instruments, with outreach events and performances that enhance the community’s knowledge of classical music.
