EDMOND COMMUNITY LEADER DONATES $25,000 TO CREATE HISTORY EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP AT UCO
The University of Central Oklahoma College of Liberal Arts recently received a $25,000 donation from Edmond community leader Kenneth Rees to create the Kenneth R. Rees Endowed Scholarship in History Education.
Rees, who is passionate about public education, hopes the scholarship recipients will become strong historians who make a significant impact on K-12 students in the classroom.
“I hope this scholarship will attract gifted students who exhibit a passion for History instruction in public schools and who are eager to employ creative approaches that infect their future students with this same passion to learn about our fascinating past and how it reverberates into their lives,” said Rees.
To be eligible for the scholarship, applicants must be full-time UCO students majoring in History Education, have an overall GPA of 3.0 with a 3.5 GPA in all history courses and be participating in student teaching in the next fall semester. Students may apply for the scholarship in the spring.
Longtime Edmond residents, Kenneth and Gae Rees helped launch and grow several community organizations including the Edmond Public Schools Foundation and Edmond Fine Arts Institute. In 2013, Kenneth Rees was inducted into the Edmond Public Schools Foundation Hall of Fame.
“We are so appreciative of the support of our university friends like Mr. Rees,” said Gary Steward, Ph.D., dean of the College of Liberal Arts.
“His passion for both public education and History provides a true testament to our students and community of education’s vital importance in the future of our state.”
