UCO TO HOST TLC ‘SAY YES TO THE DRESS: ATLANTA’ STAR, BREAST CANCER SURVIVOR LORI ALLEN
The University of Central Oklahoma and the UCO Panhellenic Association will host TLC’s “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” star Lori Allen from 7-9 p.m. Oct. 16 in the Nigh University Center (NUC) third floor ballrooms.
Allen, who has been cancer-free for more than a year, learned she had breast cancer while taking her husband of 34 years to the hospital for his own cancer-related surgery.
“The Panhellenic Executive Board wanted to provide the UCO community with an opportunity to hear from a woman who is a successful entrepreneur, has faced obstacles in her life and found the courage to keep going,” said Jenna Lutz, assistant director of Fraternity and Sorority Life at UCO.
The 54-year-old Allen owns Atlanta’s Bridals By Lori, one of the largest full-service bridal salons in the country. She was in the midst of running her business and filming both “Say Yes to the Dress: Atlanta” and “Say Yes to the Dress: Bridesmaids” when her annual mammogram reminder arrived in the mail. Citing a full schedule and prior mammograms that had consistently come back normal, Allen set it aside. After two more reminders from her hospital, she relented and made an appointment.
When Allen’s cancer diagnosis arrived, she recognized her unique ability to reach women at risk for breast cancer. She invited TLC to film her journey and in response, the network developed an hour-long special chronicling Allen’s surgery and recovery, “Say Yes to the Cure: Lori’s Fight.”
The free event is open to the public and will feature refreshments, a silent auction and representatives from Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Attendees are asked to wear pink in support of Allen, National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
UCO’s Panhellenic Association is a coalition of the university’s five National Panhellenic Conference sorority chapters, including Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Gamma Delta, Alpha Xi Delta, Delta Zeta and Sigma Kappa.
